Several Italian cities have introduced closures\, restrictions and limitations on artists’ access to historic city centre s\, while the same regulations often continue to state their intention to recognise and promote street arts. It is from this contradiction that The State of the Art takes its starting point: a day of discussion dedicated t o performing arts in public space and to the conditions needed for them to be recognised as an integral part of the cultural life of cities. The iss ue is not only about the rules governing artists’ presence in public spa ce. It also concerns the way cities imagine and shape public space\, the r elationship between citizens and artistic practices\, the training of thos e who choose to work in the performing arts and\, more broadly\, the possi bility of building sustainable professional careers. The day brings togeth er three closely connected dimensions: education\, training and profession alisation. From the first encounter between an artist and an audience in a n urban setting\, to the development of new skills\, and finally to the ec onomic and organisational conditions that allow an artistic profession to grow and remain sustainable over time.
